Bella ciao is historically the show that marked the beginning of the Italian folk revival. In 2014, on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, an outstanding cast including some of the most important figures of Italian world music staged a new production under the musical direction of Riccardo Tesi.
The success achieved throughout Europe demonstrated that the songs of Bella ciao not only preserve all of their expressive power today, but have also gained a renewed urgency in the globalized world because of their libertarian, pacifist, and civic values.
In 2021 the group decided to expand the boundaries of this popular fresco by integrating the music of southern Italy, which had been absent from the first edition. Thus the second chapter was born: South of Bella ciao.
New rhythms (tamurriata, ballo tondo, pizzica), melodies shaped by Mediterranean influences, poetry that is more lyrical in love songs and harsher in songs of revolt— all the contradictions of the South are present in these songs, which once again help us understand and interpret our present.
